May marks Mental Health Awareness Month, and we’re starting it with some real talk—and real myth-busting—about teen mental health. 🎤
In the newest episode of Parenting Shrink Wrapped, I team up with my co-host, child and adolescent psychiatrist Dr. Melissa Wellner, to break down three of the most common (and dangerous) misconceptions we hear from parents all the time. These myths can prevent kids from getting the help they need—or leave parents feeling confused, scared, and unsure how to support their teens.
Let’s set the record straight.
Myth #1: “Teens are just moody. It’s normal.”
Well… kind of. Teen moodiness is developmentally typical—but that doesn’t mean everything should be written off as “just a phase.” In this episode, we talk about:
- The difference between expected teen mood swings and clinical red flags
- What to watch for when it comes to sleep, appetite, social withdrawal, and academic performance
- How to know when your teen’s functioning is impaired—and when it’s time to step in
Myth #2: “If something was really wrong, my teen would tell me.”
Wouldn’t that be nice? Unfortunately, it’s not usually how teens operate. In this episode, we explore:
- Why teens don’t always recognize they’re struggling—or fear burdening their parents
- The two biggest reasons teens hide how they’re really doing
- How to approach your teen without triggering shutdown mode (hint: lead with curiosity, not conclusions)
Myth #3: “Medication will change my kid’s personality.”
This one’s a biggie. Dr. Wellner shares her clinical insights on why this myth is so persistent—and why it’s simply not true. We cover:
- What psychiatric medication is really meant to do (and what it isn’t)
- How the right medication supports functioning—not personality overhaul
- What to watch for when starting a new med and how to collaborate with your prescriber
