Do any of these parenting concerns sound familiar?
- “It seems that every time I ask my child to do anything, a fight could erupt.”
- “When it comes to raising my teen, I never know which battles to pick—How do I know which things to let slide and which thing to take a stand on?”
- “How do I start a difficult conversation with my child without her shutting down?”
- “How can I help my teen to follow rules AND keep my relationship with her strong?”
- “As long as it’s fun and games or my kid is getting what she wants, things are smooth sailing. But whenever I try to ‘parent’ my child, it can result in World War 3.”
- “I worry I’m not providing my child with the tools he’ll need for adulthood, but when I try to provide those tools, there’s often a communication breakdown.”
- “I don’t really know what I’m doing, and I worry about screwing up my child.”
- “My child just seems so shut down, and I’m worried? How do I get him to open up?”
- “I did fine as a parent during the elementary school years, but the adolescent years are totally new territory, and my old tricks aren’t working anymore.”
- “Am I doing enough? Am I giving enough? Am I enough as a parent?”
Instead of worrying about all of the above, would you like
- To feel less reactive when it comes to your teen’s behaviors?
- To have more authentic and meaningful conversations with your teen?
- To experience more connection and fewer arguments?
- To stop feeling like you’re winging it when it comes to your parenting choices?
- To make sure your teen is prepared for their own future?
- To feel grounded, prepared, and patient when it comes to raising your teen?
- To receive fewer eye roles and have more inside jokes?
- To be the parent YOUR CHILD needs you to be?
Helping Teens to Thrive by Supporting Their Parents
My life’s work is to help teens thrive. Helping kids to feel confident, connected, and calm is my way of making a difference in the world. I know that those well-equipped children will grow into well-regulated adults with the power to
- peacefully resolve conflicts,
- to connect meaningfully with others,
- to beautify and preserve their environment,
- and to invent solutions to problems big and small.
And aren’t these the wishes of parents, too—for their kids to grow up ready to contribute to and reap the rewards from their communities?
Sometimes, working with their adults is the best avenue for helping a teen to thrive.
This is to say that parent coaching has a double reward. First, my work helps parents feel less triggered, more grounded, and more assured of what to say and do, no matter the curveballs that come with raising an adolescent. I give my clients the tools they need to change dysfunctional communication patterns that may be blocking the parent-child connection. I help you feel in control of yourself, so you can respond mindfully and effectively to your children, even in emotionally charged situations.
Second, though I may not be working directly with the teen(s) in a household, my time with their parents certainly benefits the kid(s). I’ve never in my life met a teen who enjoyed being in conflict with or feeling disconnected from their caregivers. We humans are wired for relationship, and that doesn’t change when a child hits adolescence. Certainly, it’s normal for a child to turn their attention towards peers during this time period. But the child doesn’t want the newfound focus on peer relationships to fully supplant their parents. Teens still need and want guidance, affirmation, and love from their parents. Some don’t know how to ask for it, however, during a time of such intense—and not always easy– transition.
My work gives parents the tools to keep their cool, enforce healthy boundaries in keeping with household values, AND maintain strong connections to their adolescent children. Everybody wins!
Why is GROUP Parent COACHING worth the investment?
A Live, community Experience
While some of my group coaching options come with pre-recorded videos, that’s not where the support stops. And I don’t hand you off to one of my “team members”. We all show up live for every call, during which there is space for laughter, spur of the moment questions, and clarifications. Teen Savvy Group coaching programs provide accountability, camaraderie, and the opportunity to get feedback IN REAL TIME from a REAL LIVE COACH with decades of experience working with teens and their families.
What you learn will serve you and your teen for years to come
You’ll leave with tools to help you address your current parenting issues AND the curveballs your teen will throw at you down the line. In other words, the learning you do during your group coaching program will serve you (and your child) for years to come.
You’ll find a team of parent supporters
Raising a teen, if you’re doing it right, is also about loss. It’s about raising a human who will eventually leave your nest and become a productive member of society. This means that loving a teenager is also about letting go of your child bit by bit. This is tough stuff that can make parents feel pretty lonely. Your coaching group members are a team of fellow parents who are rooting for you and your kid. This type of connection cannot be overstated.
Parents need a place to show up real and receive validation
Teens are not the only ones who need to feel accepted and validated. The issues in the teen years are more complex and higher stakes than they were in elementary school, which causes some parents to stop seeking support around their parenting decisions for fear of violating their child’s privacy or outing themselves for mishandling a situation. Group coaching participants can expect their coach and fellow members to serve as sounding boards and empathetic, nonjudgmental supports.
A fast and tailored way to get the support YOU and your child needs
Parent coaching is WAY faster than reading ALL THE PARENTING BOOKS. AND it’s tailored to your needs and those of your child. There are plenty of excellent books out there on raising teens. I’ve read a lot of them. Parent coaching allows you to cut through the fluff and walk away with strategies and tools that are the most relevant without having to wade through the stuff that isn’t.
A reminder that you’re a resource AND a learner
We all have something to learn and something to teach. You’ll gain confidence in your parenting know-how as you problem solve with your fellow group members, and grow your own parenting toolbox as you workshop your own issues and listen to the concerns raised by other members. As one past participant stated, “I learned the things I needed to and also things I didn’t know I needed.”
Consider the Cost of NOT Taking ACtion
Einstein said that the definition of insanity is “doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” If you aren’t happy with the status quo for your teen, your household, or your parent-child relationship, and you’ve exhausted your parenting toolkit, then how is waiting around going to help? Consider the cost for your child and your relationship of NOT adapting your parenting approaches.
You are ready for more harmony, less reactivity, and more connection in your household.
If you are ready to regain some harmony in your household, decrease your own (and maybe also your teen’s) reactivity, and increase connection with your teen, parent coaching is for you. No one is born knowing how to do this job, and most of our experience comes from having once been a teen ourselves. There is no shame in not being an expert in the field of parenting. Our kids DO NOT come with manuals. But my group programs provide you with tools, tips, and strategies that might be included in a parenting manual if one existed, and I can tailor those to you and your family. Join me for learning and laughs (because that’s what I do) to help you—and your teen—step into your full potential.
You Don’t Have to Take My Word for It. Here is what some past participants had to say about their experience in Teen SAvvy GrouP Coaching programs:
I registered for the Teen Savvy Master Class to improve my personal parenting skills and to enhance my professional practice. The program has exceeded my expectations in both areas. Everything Sam shares, from the educational component to the coaching, demonstrates her vast knowledge of effectively working with teens and their parents. She gives examples that make sense. She has done role plays to demonstrate how to present information to our teens. Sam is always positive, even if you feel you did something terribly wrong she will find the positive and expand your skill from where you are. I could talk to her all day.
-Charlene
One of the most helpful parts of the TSC Masterclass has been the group conversation after receiving some 1:1 coaching where you find out your problem isn’t unique. I like knowing I’m not alone with the issues and rough waters I’m navigating as the parent of a teen. Sam’s questioning and reasoning is sound and on point for the issues raised in the group. For me, understanding the way my teen’s emotional brain works has been a great help and has allowed me to calm situations down that might have negatively escalated prior to taking this course. What I’ve learned has helped me adjust my responses so I don’t contribute to making my kids ”flip their lids”.
-James
I had heard rave reviews of Sam, but this class exceeded even those expectations. She is extremely knowledgeable regarding the teen brain and successful methods of communicating with adolescents. I learned a tremendous amount from the class, and I’m walking away with very useful tools that I can refer back to you and continue to implement to improve our family life.
-Matthew
We absolutely recommend this class for any parent of teens. We learned strategies to reduce conflict and improve communication with our teens. We also learned a lot about ourselves and the exercises brought us closer as a family as we discovered what our family goals and values are. The support of the other parents in the group was a tremendous help and knowing that we are not alone in our challenges was both reassuring and inspiring. Take this class!
-Maura and Keven
Taking this class had the biggest impact on my parenting since becoming a parent! Sam is knowledgeable, experienced, thoughtful and patient. The class covered everything I needed, and so many things I didn’t know I needed. Working with other parents of teens made me feel supported and empowered; true friendships were built out of this shared experience. So glad this option is out there and so glad I took advantage of it… and so are my kids 🙂
