In this episode of Parenting Shrink Wrapped Melissa and I sat down with Lynn and Jon Greenberg, creators of The Creative Cab Company children's books, to talk about dyslexia, ADHD, advocacy, and why representation matters for neurodivergent children.
The conversation reminded me of W. Thomas Boyce’s book, The Orchid and the Dandelion. According to Boyce, some children are dandelions. They can grow almost anywhere. Others are orchids. They are extraordinary, creative, and beautiful, but they need the right conditions to flourish.
When the Environment Doesn't Fit
Parents often spend years wondering what's wrong with their child when the better question might be, "Is this environment meeting their needs?"
Lynn shared the challenges she faced advocating for Jon when schools dismissed concerns and misunderstood his learning differences. Despite being bright and creative, traditional approaches weren't working.
Eventually, she found a school that specialized in dyslexia, and, no shocker–Jon began to bloom.
He simply needed tools and teaching methods that fit the way his brain worked.
Labels Aren't Limitations
Many parents fear labels.
But understanding dyslexia, ADHD, or other learning differences can actually bring freedom.
A diagnosis doesn't define a child. It explains how they learn.
As Jon shared, understanding his dyslexia helped him advocate for himself and recognize that his differences were not flaws. Today, he is earning his MFA and creating award-winning books that help other children see themselves reflected in stories.
Trust Your Gut
Lynn offered some mic-drop parent wisdom:
Trust your instincts.
Parents know their children better than anyone else. If something doesn't feel right, keep asking questions. Seek evaluations. Find support. Advocate.
Your child deserves more than simply surviving school.
They deserve to thrive.
