The Truth About Mom Guilt, Mother’s Day, and the Invisible Mental Load

May 4, 2026 by teensavvy
Mother's Day episode

What is mom guilt, really?

Mom guilt is that feeling that no matter what you’re doing… it’s not enough.

It’s not always about something you did wrong. Sometimes it’s just the quiet fear that you’re not getting it right.

In this episode of Parenting Shrink Wrapped, we talk about both–the real mistakes, and the imagined ones that still weigh just as heavily.

Do all moms experience mom guilt?

I’d wager, yes. Every single one.

Even when things are going well. Even when your kids are thriving.

Sometimes it comes from a moment where something slipped through the cracks. Other times, it comes from a deeper place–this constant background noise of “Am I doing enough?”

Why does motherhood feel like a constant balancing act?

Because it is.

If you’re working, you feel like you’re missing things at home.
If you’re focused on home, something else gets pushed aside.

There’s no version where everything is perfectly balanced all the time. And that’s one of the hardest truths to accept.

What do moms actually want for Mother’s Day?

Honestly?

Not a crowded restaurant. Not a perfectly planned “Hallmark moment.”

Sometimes it’s:

  • A quiet day alone
  • Not having to plan anything
  • Someone else noticing the effort you put in every day

And sometimes… it’s just feeling seen.

What is the “invisible load” of motherhood?

It’s everything you carry that no one else sees.

The scheduling.
The remembering.
The emotional coaching.
The late-night “did I forget something?” thoughts.

It’s being the planner, the problem solver, the emotional anchor… all at the same time.

And it doesn’t turn off.

What matters most in the long run?

It’s not the perfect moments.

It’s the connection.

The small, real moments where your child opens up to you.
The moments where you realize they feel safe being themselves with you.

That’s the stuff that lasts.

Are you doing motherhood “right”?

There isn’t one right way.

There are a million different versions of “good mom.” And more of them look like you than you think.

If you’re showing up, caring, and trying…

You’re already doing it.
